Updated: October 30, 2026
If you miss the original uBlock Origin, Firefox is where it still runs in full. Chrome disabled it when it moved every extension to Manifest V3, but Mozilla decided to keep supporting the feature uBlock Origin depends on.
Why uBlock Origin still works in Firefox
uBlock Origin inspects each request a page makes in real time and decides whether to block it. Chrome removed that ability for ad blockers with Manifest V3. Mozilla adopted Manifest V3 too, but kept support for the blocking feature that tools like uBlock Origin use, so the full version keeps working.
uBlock Origin (Firefox) vs uBlock Origin Lite (Chrome)
| uBlock Origin in Firefox | uBlock Origin Lite in Chrome | |
|---|---|---|
| Blocking method | Live, per request | Rules declared in advance |
| Custom filter lists | Any list | Limited |
| Element picker | Full | Reduced |
| Reacts to YouTube changes | Fast, via list updates | Slower |
| Works on Android | Yes, in Firefox for Android | No (Chrome mobile has no extensions) |
How to install uBlock Origin in Firefox safely
- Open the official Firefox Add-ons site (addons.mozilla.org) and search for "uBlock Origin".
- Check that the developer is Raymond Hill (gorhill) and that it is marked as recommended.
- Click "Add to Firefox" and confirm.
- Avoid look-alike add-ons with similar names: several copycats exist.
Should you switch from Chrome to Firefox?
If full uBlock Origin matters most to you, Firefox is the simplest way to keep it. If you prefer to stay in Chrome because of your bookmarks, passwords or work tools, a Manifest V3 blocker such as uBlock Origin Lite or Qhawa covers most ads.
What Qhawa does
Qhawa is for people who stay in Chrome: it blocks ads and trackers with public lists like EasyList, removes YouTube ads, and warns about known phishing and malware pages. It is free and never charges advertisers.
